Decision on gay marriage in Canberra expected soon

GAY COUPLES hoping to travel to Canberra to get married might be best to wait until at least next week before booking a trip south.

The High Court on Tuesday reserved its decision over a Commonwealth challenge to the Australian Capital Territory's marriage equality laws passed in October.

While same-sex couples were expected to get married under the laws as early as this weekend, the decision may affect the validity of such marriages.

After the ACT Parliament passed its Marriage Equality Act less than two months ago, the Abbott Government promptly moved to challenge the laws in the court.

The Commonwealth's challenge will rest on whether the High Court believes the ACT laws are inconsistent with the national Marriage Act.

A decision was expected to be made by next Thursday.
