Gardeners hope for regional award
THE Northern Rivers' best-kept secret this week is the list of winners of the Regional Home Garden Education Club Annual Spring Garden Competition.
The judge has visited all sites and the results are about to be released this Friday in Casino.
Ray and Fay Hanlon's garden at 7 Jade Avenue, Goonellabah, represents Lismore this year as the local champion garden.
The Hanlons won the regional award last year and will be happy to keep the trophy in Lismore.
Married for 55 years and living in Goonellabah since 1989, Fay and Ray started gardening as a way to relieve stress and help Fay recover from cancer eight years ago.
"I started just for myself. It really helped me during that time, but then someone asked me to enter the garden in the competition. We did it once and we started winning awards," she said.
The Lismore Home Garden Club awarded 28 different categories of gardens last weekend.
Secretary Judy Thorne said the most popular categories were back and front gardens, pot plants, schools and retirement villages.
The winner of the retirement village category was Ozanam Villa.
Leisure and lifestyle manager Suzette Anlezark said the gardens at Ozanam are one of the most important sources of entertainment, socialising and physical activity for the residents.
Judy Thorne said nine schools entered vegetable and flower gardens this year.
Wyrallah Road Public School won the category for schools with 100 students and over.
