Gap-life leads to Sue’s dream job

IF ARTIST Sue McMaster had known how much went into running a business, she might not have taken a chance and purchased Murray's Art and Framing when she did.

Mrs McMaster, who said she was studying a degree in creative arts, jumped at the chance when the opportunity came up and a year later believes it was a "match made in heaven".

She said she had always enjoyed painting - her baby book was filled with drawings - and started portrait painting at the age of 14.

"That was my passion," she said.

She painted as a hobby, got married and raised her two children.

After they grew up, she decided she wanted to pursue her passion.

"You could say I had a 'gap-life'," she said.

"We were looking at (university) courses for my eldest (daughter) and I found one I liked, so I signed up."

Mrs McMaster said since she started working as the owner at Murray's Art and Framing, she had many tasks to complete in the day-to-day running of the store.

She came into work about 8.15am and began the routine of unlocking the store and getting ready to open the doors to customers at 8.45am.

Mrs McMaster said daily activities included serving customers, checking stock levels, checking labelling on price tags in the retail side of the store, providing relief for staff members to go and have their breaks and more.

There were also art classes being run on premises, so she would take some time to step in and see how things were going.

When she wasn't at work, Mrs McMaster said she spent her time painting and attending exhibition and gallery openings.

Mrs McMaster moved to Toowoomba from Sydney about eight years ago for a "tree change".
