Funeral convoy horror as drivers 'disrespect' mourners

GRIEF-STRICKEN mourners are furious after a funeral procession through Ballina last week was intercepted by "insensitive and careless" drivers.

Lee White, 23, died in a crash on the Pacific Hwy near Bangalow on New Year's Day that also claimed the life of Ballina woman Louise Morgan.

Lee's funeral was held at Seacoast Church on Friday.

Hundreds of family members, friends, colleagues and fellow members of the Nomads Motorcycle Club North Coast gathered to say goodbye to the popular butcher.

After the service, a group of motorbikes took Lee's casket on his "last ride" through Ballina, followed by a procession of mourners in cars.

But Jan Rae, who says Lee was "like another son" to her, said it quickly turned into a nightmare.

"All we wanted was for Lee to have his last ride in peace," she said.

"He was taken so young ... our brother and mate deserved to have his last wish granted.

"It sickens my soul to have witnessed the disrespect, downright rudeness, insensitivity and uncaring people who should and could have helped us get our mate to his final resting place.

"Were the roads blocked for us? No. Instead we got nothing but disrespect from everyone, cutting into our funeral procession, honking horns and hurling abuse.

"I hope it never happens to anyone else. There were nearly so many accidents, even though we all had our headlights on and our hazard lights; it was pretty obvious it was a funeral procession. It was so distressing.

"It was heartbreaking because we are already so devastated about losing Lee, and then this happened. He was such a wonderful kid and this is not what he deserved.

"I have never been so disgusted with humanity in my whole life and I am no longer proud to call Ballina my home."

A Facebook page has been set up in memory of Lee, called RIP Lee White, which has more than 850 likes.
