Free the Nipple is great, but campaign is for selfish ends
THE internet is breaking again and this time it's over Twitter's controversial nipple policy.
International supermodel Chrissy Teigan has started a movement by protesting against the social media giant for banning pictures that contain the dreaded female nipple while approving the majestic male nipple.
I fundamentally agree with her protests because I don't believe in censorship and it's just downright taboo.
The female form should celebrated in all its glory no matter what shape, size or colour it takes, but this is my problem with Chrissy's protest:
She's not doing it to free women from the shackles of male oppression - she's doing it because she stands to make a whole lot of money from exposing her nipple.
She and the global conglomerate that is the modelling industry make billions of dollars from promoting an unhealthy body image to young girls.
Swimwear models are paid fortunes to work out all day of every day to perfect their bodies, which is simply an unrealistic and unattainable look for the average woman.
It is also well noted that many swimwear models can afford and often do turn to plastic surgery (I'm not accusing Chrissy of doing so).
Chrissy and the superficial male-dominated industry she works for contribute nothing to society but a legacy of poor self-esteem.
Twitter can be a useful for spreading important information quicker than any other medium but if your biggest worry is how a supermodel can best satisfy her vanity then maybe you should question why you even use Twitter at all.
And if you don't like it, you could always just not use it.
