Petrolheads mourn plans to ditch motoring icons

FALCON and Commodore lovers across the nation have put aside their differences to mourn the passing of their beloved cars.

Both Ford and Holden have indicated that they will no longer manufacture their signature models after 2016.

The end of the Falcon and Commodore will mark the end of a long-standing rivalry between the two brands and their owners.

Self-confessed Ford girl Hayley Taylor invested in a FG XR6 Falcon in 2010.

She has enjoyed driving the family car and was saddened to hear of the demise of the iconic brand.

"It is a good car," she said.

"The reason we got it was because dad had a Falcon ute and enjoyed driving it."

Mrs Taylor's affinity for Ford is also shared by her husband, Ben, whose first car was a 1992 model XR8.

The first Falcon sold in Australia was the XK series introduced in September 1960.

The XK range expanded in May 1961 with the addition of a utility and a panel van body styles.

The first Holden Commodore VB sedan sold between 1978 and 1980.

In 1978 Holden produced 3.6 million VB Commodores.

Holden has revealed that up to 320 jobs at its Port Melbourne V6 engine plant are in jeopardy beyond 2016.

Neither manufacturer has confirmed what will replace the cars.

However, Holden has suggested they would "re-evaluate" their SUV cars.
