Fire breaks out on Girards Hill

A weatherboard house in Girards Hill was gutted by fire on Tuesday afternoon with a man and his 12-year-old son escaping without injury.

Lismore Fire Brigade commander Fraser Hindry said they received several 000 calls at around 1pm.

“We saw a large volume of black smoke as we made our way to the job... the intensity of the fire meant we could only do external fire fighting initially,” he said.

The residents of the three-bedroom house were alerted to the fire by neighbours and firefighters quickly established that all of the occupants were accounted for.

Mr Hindry said four vehicles from Lismore and Goonellabah attended and were able to protect all adjoining properties.

The fire was quickly brought under control and within about 40 minutes of getting the call, they were carrying out salvage operations and trying to establish the cause of the fire.
