Netball: Finals win eased the pain for plucky Schultz

LOUISE Schultz probably shouldn't have taken the court to play in her netball grand final, but her competitive nature would not allow her to sit out and watch her Valleys Stars play.

In fact, for much of the back half of the season, Schulz has been playing through the pain of a leg injury.

But it was worth it to have a premiership trophy on the mantelpiece.

"I am heavily strapped, so that helped," she said.

"I hope to be back next season."

So far, Schultz is one for one in Gladstone after moving from Melbourne before the season began.

Perhaps the hardest part of the entire journey was selecting a club to play with.

She played for quite a while back in Victoria, and found having to choose a new team a difficult one.

"They had an open day and it is the first open day I have been to with all clubs in the same room," she laughed.

"Valleys seemed the most friendly at the time."

Schultz has since found all the clubs to be friendly and offering a welcoming environment to play netball.

But on the score board, she picked the right team to be running around with.

That was up in the air for a while though, particularly early in the fourth quarter of the grand final when the Yaralla Falcons were coming back hard and looked threatening.

Gladstone Junior Player of the Year Sharni Small, Gladstone Senior Player of the Year and Umpire of the Year Yasmin Ramsay and Gladstone Coach of the Year Danielle Fox were all recognised on grand final day.

"It was nerve-wracking, I started to get nervous and worried," she said.

Schultz's need for the challenge is shown in her injury and the way she has dealt with it so far.

"I didn't want to get checked, I just wanted to go until the end of the season," she laughed.
