A 59-YEAR-OLD man was allegedly glassed during a speed dating function at a Caloundra bowls club.

Patrons at the Valentine's Day function at Club Central Caloundra were stunned when two men became involved in a heated argument which became a physical fight.

Police claim the argument began when a 40-year-old man made comments about the older man's wife.

The pair began tussling and then fighting, falling on to tables and sending glasses flying at the usually sedate club in Arthur St.

Senior Sergeant Darren Edwards said the 40-year-old man allegedly had picked up a glass and struck the older man on the side of the face near his temple.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Caloundra Hospital with a cut to his face.

The alleged offender was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and will appear in court on March 6.

Witnesses said club staff had cordoned the offender in a room while waiting for police to arrive.

Club Central Caloundra declined to comment.

"This could have been worse with glasses involved in the altercation, but the scarring can be terrible," Snr Sgt Edwards said.

"It would not have been a nice experience for the patrons, especially somewhere where it is usually quiet."

Witnesses said although the incident was completely out of place at the club, it was not enough to stop line-dancing fans who continued dancing throughout the commotion.
