Fear of violent protests fades

NEW South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell has heaped praise on Muslim leaders and police for helping to prevent a repeat of last weekend's violent protest in Sydney.

Islamic leaders have also met several times since last weekend's riot and have appealed to their communities not to stage further protests.

Mr O'Farrell says it seems the message to stay away has been heeded.

"I'm delighted that police arrested two lunatics yesterday who were trying to encourage further protests," he told a press conference today.
