Ex-Saint backs Buckley for Gold Coast Suns job

ST KILDA legend Nathan Burke says the Gold Coast Suns should appoint Nathan Buckley as senior coach following the sacking of Rodney Eade.

Buckley is currently in a fight to keep his job at Collingwood and is out of contract at the end of the year.

Burke believes the Suns have lost relevance and as such, need to appoint a strong media performer like Buckley.

"When your whole relevance as a club is being questioned, that is not a good thing," Burke said on Fox Sports.

"Certainly, in this year, in games and (on) the ladder they're not relevant but they need some high-profile person to come in.

"I know they are talking (John) Barker and Brett Ratten and these sort of guys. For me, I'm going to go left field. I'm going to say a guy like Nathan Buckley."

Buckley took over the top job at Collingwood from Mick Malthouse at the end of the 2011 season.

After taking the Magpies to a preliminary final in his first year, Collingwood has fallen down the ladder each season under Buckley.

The Magpies haven't played finals since 2014.

Burke said a change of clubs would be a win for everyone.

"Get out of Collingwood, leave that behind, leave all that baggage, Mick Malthouse, behind," he said.

"It makes their (Collingwood's) decision a lot easier. He is a great media performer, that is what they need up there.

"A fresh start with younger players and let's see whether Bucks can actually coach. For me, that's where I'd be looking."
