Essential Mathematics introduction criticised

PLANS to allow senior high school students in NSW to choose an easier maths subject have been condemned by academics in all other states.

Essential Mathematics has been introduced to the NSW curriculum following submissions to the NSW Government last year that a simpler subject be offered to students in Year 11 and 12 who have struggled to master complicated maths.

According to the Herald, the Mathematical Association of NSW is concerned the subject will attract able students looking for an easy pass.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority submitted the subject would run counter to policy settings around the country.

Essential Mathematics will be one of four maths subjects students starting Year 11 this year will be able to choose from.
