ONE of the biggest events of New Year's Eve has officially kicked off, with volunteers working all through yesterday to get the grounds set up for the Tropical Fruits New Year's Eve Party.

And it is certainly kicking off with a bang.

Event co-ordinator Shane Duniam said there were more than 300 volunteers working to get the grounds set up and make sure that everyone had a great time over the New Year.

"It's a lot of volunteer love and energy that goes into it," he said.

Mr Duniam said people were lining up at the Lismore Showgrounds at 6am yesterday, waiting for their chance to pitch their tents and set up their camp for the next few days.

"We've got people from all over the world and all over Australia coming here."

These include first-timers to Tropical Fruits NYE party, and those who have been and loved it before, he said.

"They've been waiting all year to come back."

Mr Duniam said that the ticket sales have been between 25-40% up from last year.

"Capacity is 3500, and it looks like we're going to do it," he said.

Production assistant Fanny Waterfalls said she was looking forward to dressing up, catching up with friends and making new ones.

Tomorrow will see the opening street parade and the Queer Fruits Film Festival begin, before the youth and camping parties happen on Sunday then the big New Year's Eve party goes down on Monday.

Tuesday will see the pool party and recovery barbecue.
