Employment and Labour Force Snapshot

THE latest Labour Force figures to come from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that unemployment is up slightly but only by the slimmest of margins.

While the flat unemployment rate remained at 5.4%, seasonally adjusted it moved up by 0.1%.

The participation rate, the number of people who qualify for the workforce who are working or looking for work, stayed steady at 65.1% while the slight increase in unemployment dropped hours worked by 1.1 million to 1,623.5 million hours worked.

Underemployment stayed level at 7.2%, only 0.1% below the record high recorded in May last year, indicating that while unemployment may be low, the number of workers who don't have enough work is still high.
