WEST Australian Luke Durbridge is on the road to a limitless future after the 21-year-old wrote himself into the history books in Ballarat.

The Orica GreenEDGE rider was the first to complete the time trial-road race double at the national championships.

Durbridge, who rode solo for the final 20km of the 195.6km road race on Sunday, crossed the line 64 seconds ahead of teammate Michael Matthews.

Orica team director Matt Wilson said while some people had compared Durbridge to Swiss time trial star Fabian Cancellara, he thinks they should also consider a comparison with Englishman Bradley Wiggins, the 2012 Tour de France champion and Olympic gold medallist from London.

"Luke's an absolute, phenomenal talent ... whatever he sets his mind to, he'll be able to do," Wilson said.

"People compare him to Cancellara, but I think possibly he's more of a Wiggins."

Durbridge will be part of the powerful Orica GreenEDGE team to contest the Tour Down Under which begins in Adelaide on January 22.
