LISMORE physiotherapist and nutritionist, Verona Chadwick, believes we are in the grip of a pain epidemic which can be better addressed through diet and lifestyle choices rather than more drugs.
She says poor diet and bad lifestyle choices drive chronic illness, inflammation and pain and she has written a book, How to Live a Life Without Pain, to show people how to beat pain the natural way.
"Too much sugar is toxic to the body and insulin is stimulated to deposit the sugar as fat," she said.
"Multiple studies have linked high insulin levels to inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, chronic pain, metabolic syndrome, depression, fatigue, sexual dysfunction, and cancer.
"All these conditions result in chronic pain that many sufferers struggle to remedy.
"A recent study by the University of NSW found that the consumption of sugary drinks is linked to a rapid increase in obesity in Australia. Combine this high sugar intake with fast foods high in saturated and animal fats, and the cell membranes become stiff, brittle and inflamed.
"In short, it's a recipe for chronic pain."
Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell will launch the book on Thursday (March 21) at 12.30pm, at the Lismore Workers Club.
