Drag races come to Casino

A drag race meeting held last Saturday (March 27) brought local families and petrol heads out to celebrate car culture at the Casino airstrip.

The races were over a 1/8 mile track, as opposed to the usual quarter mile and featured four cylinder, six cylinder and V8 cars, as well as turbo and supercharged categories, plus motor bikes and exhibition cars.

About 120 racers competed and first time racer Nat Buchanan who got up to a highest speed of 138 km/h in his Toyota Supra said it was “great fun”.

“The car felt good. I won a few, lost a few, it was just good to see an event where we could take our cars and do something like that.

“Once you got on the line you didn’t really worry too much about the sped, it was just you and the other bloke.”

Nat was racing in his regular car, which has had a few modifications and he has already signed up for the next event on May 23.
