Double cancer diagnosis shock for Coast family

A COOLUM family is still struggling to cope with the shock of having two members diagnosed with cancer just days apart.

The Christensen family's fortunes looked dire when dad, Bob, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma on December 31.

Then in the first week of the new year it was discovered his 15-year-old daughter Jessica had terminal leukaemia.

Doctors were shocked when two of the same family were diagnosed with cancer within a week of each other and said they had never come across a similar case.

While the family is putting up a brave fight, they are doing it tough as they battle ill health and the bills pile up.

Mr Christensen has been forced to give up work and will not be able to return for at least six months.

Mum Lisa and daughter Jordan, 7, have moved to Brisbane to be with him and Jessica, who also has cerebral palsy.

Daughter Dana, 19, and son Conrad, 17, have remained on the Coast because the accommodation complex the family is staying at near the Brisbane hospital is too small.

"To be honest, I was quite angry that two tragedies could happen to us in such a short period of time," Dana said.

Friends of the family have set up an online fundraiser, with a target of $30,000.

It is hoped that Jessica will be able to return home this week.

Doctors are unable to say exactly how much time she has left, while Bob will undergo chemotherapy for the next six weeks and is hopeful of a recovery.

The family hopes to buy a specially fitted van so they can transport Jessica and provide her with ongoing quality of life.

"I just want to say thank you to everyone who is helping out," Dana said.
