Don’t flip-flop, go for record to beat Austria
THEY'RE as Aussie as meat pies, kangaroos and footy, so it makes no sense that Austria holds the world record for thong-racing.
Yep, a country better known for alps, mountain climbing and strudel is beating us at our own game.
But down at the Duporth Tavern in Maroochydore, staff and regulars aren't prepared to sit back and take it.
Not while Aussie pride is on the line.
So this Australia Day they'll be putting their best thong-clad feet forward in an attempt to steal the world record back.
The record of 352 thong-wearing runners looks set to tumble as Australia Day revellers run, walk, skip or jog over a 1km course.
Tavern general manager Aaron Jensen said he was blown away that the record did not already belong to Australia.
"Mate, I think every one on the Coast should get involved and take back what is rightfully ours," he said.
"What better day to do it than on Australia Day. Show the mateship and social spirit."
Mr Jensen hopes to assemble more than 500 thong-wearers looking to secure their place in history. Registrations can be made at www.duporthtavern.com or by phoning 5443 1999.
Everyone who registers before the day will receive a free sausage sizzle and there will be plenty of Australia Day events after the record attempt to keep every one entertained.
The race is set to start at 11am but participants are asked to be at the tavern by 10am.
