Dockers coach almost missed winning goal

FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon was so convinced his side had lost Sunday's game at the MCG he thought Richmond had kicked another goal in the dying seconds.

Lyon left the coach's box in disgust after Brandon Ellis put the Tigers in front with 21 seconds left and missed the match-winning final play from ruckman Aaron Sandilands and midfielder Lachie Neale.

"It's a fine line between pleasure and pain," he said on Triple M on Monday morning.

Describing his reaction when Ellis kicked Richmond's fifth goal for the quarter, Lyon said: "I uttered a few adjectives, which I'd been doing for the previous 15 minutes.

"The midfield coaches were ducking for cover, in particular. I think they'd kicked 4.2 from clearances. I was just disgusted really that we'd allowed it to happen.

"I walked out, there were a couple of security guys with me and it was all silent.

"I was gutted as I was in the lift."

But things changed when the lift doors opened, although Lyon still watched Mundy's fateful kick on a TV monitor under the stand.

"I heard a roar and I thought, 'They've kicked another one, the Tigers' and I look up and Mundy's got the ball.

"I looked up and thought, '30-degree angle ... we're a chance, here'."

Lyon said he felt for Richmond.

"Those momentum swings are so hard to stop, I watched the Pies the night before and thought you've just got to do some simple things right at the end."

But the result didn't change his mood completely.

"They still copped a spray. I had to vent to let it out," Lyon said.
