A HORSE which fell into a well on a property at Duranbah was winched to safety after a four-hour gruelling rescue.

Yesterday, a distressed 15-year-old stallion was found trapped in muddy water in a deep well on a rural property.

Police called Tweed District Rescue for assistance to retrieve the distressed animal.

Rescuers dug down the side of the well and smashed through concrete in order to release the animal.

It is understood the horse was able to walk after being rescued.
