Detectives investigating assault of baby make arrest

CHILD abuse detectives investigating the assault of a baby, who was hospitalised with burns to his stomach and genitals, have arrested a man in Sydney's south-west.

A six-month-old boy required immediate surgery when he was taken to hospital suffering burns and bruising and a subsequent septic bacterial infection last month.

A 21-year-old man, who is related to the infant, has since been charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm and failure of a person with responsibility to care for a child.

He fronted court on Wednesday and was released on bail until his next court appearance on December 11.
