Derby girls are on a roll

LOCAL derby girls Northern Rivers Roller Derby (NRRD) are on a roll.

Not only did they win their home game against the Brisbane City Rollers (BCR) last weekend, they've won all of their recent games, showing that their hard work and dedicated training is finally paying off. A crowd of spectators packed into Lismore Skating Rink on Saturday, June 30 to see NRRD's Battlestar Girlacticas beat BCR's B-team, Nasty Nancies with a massive final point score of 315 to 115.

During the game's first quarter, BCR started strong and set the pace until NRRD took control and turned the game around in their favour. Some well-timed team time-outs enabled NRRD to regroup and restructure, bringing their own tactical blocking manoeuvres into play. By the end of the first half, NRRD were in the lead, with no small thanks to NRRD jammer Nora the Explorer clocking up 20 points in a single power jam.

Throughout the game, Nora's agility as a jammer allowed her to push past the strong walls of BCR defence as she proved that speed is not always the key to getting through the pack. Her technique of pulling up at the back of the pack and then jostling her way through showed it's hard to knock a jammer over while she is moving slowly.

In the second half of the game, NRRD jammer Battered Sav continually dodged blocks and punched through the pack causing the point score to rise in NRRD's favour, despite a fast show of footwork from BCR jammer Anna Wrexya.

There was lots of hard hitting floor action and some mean shoulder blocks from NRRD. At one point, BCR jammer Narsty just couldn't break through NRRD's solid defensive wall.

Despite NRRD's captain AmazonAgetyA being sent off the rink in the second half after accruing seven major penalties, the NRRD girls managed to bring home the game and are now preparing to play North Brisbane Rollers' Raw Stars on August 4.
