Democrats and Republicans on the 'fiscal cliff'

FRANTIC negotiations to find a way to protect the American economy from the worst effects of the looming "fiscal cliff" were under way in Washington DC yesterday.

The Independent reported President Barack Obama was working with key Republican leaders to come up with proposals to prevent middle-class Americans from being hit with massive tax hikes.

"We cannot let Washington politics get in the way of America's progress," President Obama said on Friday.

Key to preventing the US national debt from tipping back into recession will be new laws, up for consideration on Monday in Washington DC.

The US Government had until January 1 to come to a resolution which suits both sides of politics, before the US descends further into economic gloom.
