Daughter became introverted and withdrawn after abuse
A DISTRAUGHT mother has told a hearing of how her young daughter became introverted and withdrawn after falling victim to convicted paedophile teacher Gerard Vincent Byrnes.
The woman, who can only be identified as KR, told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses into Child Sexual Abuse on Monday at how she noticed her daughter's demeanour change dramatically.
Her daughter, who can only be identified as KE, was one of 13 girls Byrnes abused over a two-year period at a Toowoomba primary school between 2007 and 2008.
"In 2007 I noticed KE's physical appearance started to change," she said.
"Before 2007 she had a healthy golden complexion, but during the year she became anaemic looking, her eyes became sunken and grey whereas they used to be shiny and blue."
"About this time I noticed KE's hair had become dry and did not respond to treatment
"KE also lost her appetite and started to chew and suck the bottom of her lip and the inside of her mouth."
The mother said her daughter used to come home after school and strip off her clothes and walk around the house naked as she could not stand the feeling of her clothing and she was reluctant to shower as she hated the feeling of the water on her skin.
The mother said her daughter told her that she "was so scared mummy" and "I could not do anything because I was so scared" when she spoke about the abuse she suffered at the hands of Byrnes.
