Cyclone Christine brings 170kmh winds to WA

LOCALS in north-west Western Australia have spent the night bunkered down as the destructive Tropical Cyclone Christine crossed the coast.

The category three storm brought gale force winds over 170 kilometres per hour and torrential rain, which will continue in parts of the region this morning, with residents remaining on red alert.

The cyclone crossed the Pilbara coast between Karratha and Port Hedland late last night, cutting power to about 7,000 customers.

Authorities say the full extent of the damage will not be known until the storm has cleared, allowing residents to properly assess the destruction.

Roebourne was one of the hardest hit areas, recording nearly 100 millimetres of rain in just four hours, between 8.30pm last night to just after midnight (local time).
