Nathan van Berlo ‘sleighed’ in training mishap

ADELAIDE Crows skipper Nathan van Berlo will be sidelined for at least six months after suffering a freak accident at training.

The 27-year-old ruptured his Achilles tendon after being struck on the back of the foot by a training sled while he was running.

The 182-gamer underwent surgery yesterday, and will be forced to wear a cast for up to three months.

Crows club doctor Andrew Potter would not rule out the possibility of van Berlo returning before the end of the season, however.

"If he progresses really well then I think this year's certainly a goal - I wouldn't put a line through this year at all," Potter told reporters yesterday. "The most important thing is to go slowly and make sure that we get good strength and good healing in the calf muscle so we don't get a re-rupture. That could be disastrous."

The club said it planned to investigate how the incident occurred.
