A BALLINA man has been killed in a single-vehicle crash on a suburban street in his own town.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Canal Rd near the intersection of Vera Rd at 4.10am yesterday and found a white Hyundai Sonata sedan had struck a tree head-on.
Police and paramedics at the scene found the 28-year-old had died instantly when he was ejected head first through the front windscreen of the car.
Richmond Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Nicole Bruce said police were appealing for any witnesses to the smash.
Insp Bruce said initial investigations indicated speed was a factor after the man lost control after coming around a corner in dry conditions.
"The vehicle has come around a corner and lost control and for several hundred metres he has attempted to regain control but has ended up crashing into a tree."
"Early examination of the scene indicates there was no direct braking by the vehicle so that's one indication that speed has been a factor."
Officers from the Ballina Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene yesterday for evidence of how the smash happened.
Police are yet to formally identify the man but confirmed he was a local from Ballina. Officers from Ballina police station will prepare a report on the incident for the coroner.
Anyone with any information on the crash is urged to call Ballina police on 6681 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
