FAIR Trading has apprehended alleged career conman Christopher Mark Conner who was operating in Tweed Heads.
The 27-year-old travelling conman operated out of Tweed Heads for a time, ripping off vulnerable people in the shire, but has been brought to justice thanks to NSW Fair Trading's crackdown on dishonest tradesman and con artists.
Mr Connor lied to Fair Trading when applying for a home building three-year Minor Maintenance Cleaning - Repairs Non-structural license on April 10, 2012.
He was subsequently charged with making a false and/or misleading statement, after being handed a Court Attendance Notice on August 3, 2012, whilst returning with family from an overseas jaunt.
Mr Conner turned himself in to the Parramatta Local Court on March, 1, 2013 and pleaded guilty to knowingly making a false and/or misleading statement and was given an 18 month good behaviour bond.
Other travelling con men Matthew Devine and Lauren Kes Gavin were also charged with similar offences.
NSW Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe said the conmen failed to tell them they had multiple aliases when applying for building licenses.
"All three men declared that they had never been known by another name or alias," he said.
Christopher Conner, alias George Fayle, was also convicted on 29 June 2012 in NSW of breaching the Australian Consumer Law regarding unsolicited consumer agreements.
He was also convicted of breaching the Home Building Act, representing he was prepared to carry out residential building work while unlicensed.
Mr Conner was ordered to pay $24,443 by Parramatta Local Court.
Conner pleaded guilty and was given an 18 month good behaviour bond.
Previously Mr Conner was successfully prosecuted by Fair Trading on Home Building and Australian Consumer Law (ACL) offences related to painting roofs in January 2012 at Glenwood, Sydney, NSW.
Mr Conner's false names are:
- George Fayle, DOB 1 January 1980. Held drivers licence issued by Tasmania and NSW Roads authorities.
- Steven Luke Marchetti, DOB 11 November 1977. Held driver's licence issued by Victoria Roads.
- Cristopher Connor, DOB 11 August 1977. Held driver's licence issued by Victoria Roads.
- Michael-John Chand, DOB 29 March 1983. Held driver's licence issued by Victoria Roads.
Fair Trading warned consumers to protect themselves and if approached by the men, to call the Travelling Conmen Hotline on 1300 133 408.
