Community service awarded

GERALDINE Nicholson had no idea it was coming, but last Friday she was awarded a Premier's Community Service Award for more than 70 years of volunteer work in the Lismore community.

Presenting the award, Lismore MP Thomas George read a list of the organisations she was involved with and the positions she's held.

"We got up to a lot of mischief," Geraldine said as she was reminded of some of the things she has done over the years.

That list includes continuous involvement with the CWA since 1938 ("except for four years during the war"), where she was president, secretary and treasurer of the Lismore branch and served as Far North Coast group president. She has also been involved with the Lismore Music Festival since 1958 and served with the War Widow's Auxiliary, Legacy and numerous other volunteer organisations.

Current CWA president Jan Clifford said Geraldine was "a bit of a character" and still an active, hard-working member of the organisation.

The CWA meets on the second Thursday of the month in their rooms at Spinks Park. They also have a handicraft day every Tuesday from 9am to raise funds for various projects and a choir day every Wednesday. Everyone is welcome. For more information phone 6621 5216.
