Coffs to host Sheffield Shield match to honour Hughes

IN HONOUR of former Australian cricketer and Macksville's favourite son, Phillip Hughes, a Sheffield Shield match will be played in Coffs Harbour.

To be played from February 25 to 28, a Phillip Hughes Tribute match will be played at C.ex Coffs International Stadium between NSW and South Australia, the two states Hughes represented during his career.

Hughes was playing for South Australia against NSW at the Sydney Cricket Ground in his final match. He tragically passed away two days after being struck while batting on day one of the game, which was immediately abandoned.

Cricket NSW Chief Executive Andrew Jones said paying tribute to such a popular member of the cricket community in this way was a perfect fit.

"Phillip was a wonderful player for NSW, South Australia and Australia, and a proud representative of Macksville and North Coast cricket. Tragically, he left us last year but he will always remain in our hearts," Mr Jones said.

"Cricket NSW is delighted that with the support of the Coffs Harbour City Council, we are able to play a tribute match in a region where Phillip was and will forever remain a favourite son."

The Phillip Hughes Tribute match is part of a three year partnership between Cricket NSW and the Coffs Harbour City Council.

"It is fantastic to see top-class cricket returning to Coffs Harbour and we are so honoured to commence the partnership with this tribute match," Coffs Harbour Mayor, Cr Denise Knight said.

The Phillip Hughes Tribute match and a NSW Second XI match will be played at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium this summer, with a Sydney Sixers warm-up match and a Cricket NSW Academy State Challenge to follow in subsequent seasons.
