THE fountain of youth has been discovered and it's been sitting in your coffee cup all this time.

Yes, that's right coffee lovers - new research has shown that your favourite morning beverage has been linked with a longer life.

Now before you rush off to grab another cuppa, or two, or three, let's review the science behind the pair of studies published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

According to the studies, which involved hundreds of thousands of subjects across a broad spectrum of society, those who drank just one cup of coffee a day were found to be 12 percent less likely to die from causes such as cancer and heart disease.

That figured jumped to 18 percent for those subjects who consumed two to three cups a day!

Among those who really love their coffee, think three or more cups a day, men were 12 percent less likely to die early compared to non-coffee drinkers, while for women, the figure was at even percent.

And coffee was also found to have remarkable powers on the psyche with male coffee drinkers associated with a lower risk of suicide.

Must be all the caffeine right? Wrong! Remarkably, the results were the same amongst subjects who drank decaffeinated coffee.

So are the results too good to be true? Maybe. The studies were purely observational and there are a lot of factors that can't be overlooked. For example, were all the test subjects fit people who were already more likely to live longer?

But the results did make one concrete finding: coffee lovers shouldn't feel guilty about their passion for another cuppa (just keep to a good number - five a day should be okay).
