Internet slams new Coca-Cola flavour

FOR the past 12 months, Coca-Cola has been busy at work creating a new flavour suggested by the company's Japan division.

Developed inside the beverage giant's US headquarters, the concept took around 50 samples before it was ready for sale.

The new flavour is a zero-calorie version of the popular beverage. Oh, and it's also clear.

Aptly called Coca-Cola Clear, the drink ditches the caramel ingredient to achieve the transparent appearance, but claims to keep the flavours for which it's famous.

The drink also includes a refreshing splash of lemon.

Since the announcement has been made, it has been met with mixed reactions on social media.

This isn't the first time we have seen clear Coca-Cola, with "white Coke" produced in the 1940s at the request of Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov.

A clear variant of Pepsi was also produced in the in the early 1990s.

Dubbed Crystal Pepsi. the soft drink was first sold in Europe in the early 1990s and then made its way to the United States and Canada from 1992 to 1993.

The UK and Australia had Crystal Pepsi briefly from 2015 to 2017.

Coca-Cola clear will be released on June 11, but at this stage it will be exclusively in Japan.
