Coast surfers to protest Bight oil drilling

A PADDLE out at Noosa this Sunday will give Sunshine Coast surfers the chance to join a nation-wide campaign to block proposed oil drilling in the Greater Australian Bight.

To date, tens of thousands have paddled out in locations from Sydney Harbour and Perth, Newcastle, Hobart, Torquay, Burleigh Heads, Melbourne and Adelaide in opposition to proposed oil drilling by Norwegian mining company, Equinor.

The Noosa #fightforthebight paddle out will be held at Noosa Main Beach from 9am.

Participants were encouraged to bring surfboards, bodyboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, surf skis and other personal water craft to the event.

The Great Australian Bight Alliance included, Surfrider Foundation Australia, Sea Shepherd, Patagonia, the Wilderness Society, Mirning and Kokatha elders, Oil Free Seas Kangaroo Island and Clean Bight Alliance Australia (West Coast SA).

"Given the state of the world's oceans, the Great Australian Bight is rare and unique, an area of global significance and deserves the utmost protection,” said Sea Shepherd Australia Managing Director Jeff Hansen.

"The Bight is rich in beauty and biodiversity, boasting the world's most significant southern right whale nursery as well as humpback, sperm, blue and beaked whales. It's also Australia's most important sea lion nursery and supports orcas, great white sharks and fish down to the small pelagic.”

Participants will gather at Noosa Main Beach West - Access 13 ahead of the 9am start on Sunday.
