Clive Palmer filmed using device in Rolls Royce

MINING magnate Clive Palmer has been filmed using a mobile device while driving his Rolls Royce on M1.

Jeff Hayes told Seven News he could not believe it when he looked across and saw the Sunshine Coast MP at the wheel with a device in his hand.

Mr Hayes said Mr Palmer was driving about 60km/h to 80km/h in peak hour traffic and did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt.

"We were sort of stunned,'' Mr Hayes said.

"We could not believe it.''

"He did not look up once at the mirror.

"He didn't look across.''

Senior police said it was disappointing public figures like Mr Palmer were not setting a better example.

They confirmed they would be investigating the millionaire MP who they said was subject to the same road rules as everyone else.

If Mr Palmer was found to be not wearing a seat belt and using a device he could face more than $700 in fines and the loss of six demerit points.

The MP denied he was using a phone, saying his Rolls Royce had a hands free system.

He admitted he could have been using an iPad.

Mr Palmer told Fairfax  the accusation was ridiculous.

"It shows I am looking at my iPad," Mr Palmer said.

"Big deal. Look how big it is. Look how big my thumb is," he said.

"You journos are a hopeless lot really."

"It is not worth commenting on shit like that," he said.

Mr Palmer said he always wore a seat belt.

The story came as Sunshine Coast police warned of a crackdown on mobile phone use.
