Classical music at St Andrews

Lovers of classical music will get an opportunity to hear works by Vivaldi, Bach, Tchaikovski, Mozart and Pachelbel at St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Lismore when the Cologne New Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra performs there on Saturday, March 20.

The nine-piece chamber orchestra is doing 28 concerts through Victoria, NSW and Queensland, predominantly in regional areas.

“If you play in Melbourne and Sydney and Brisbane, it is quite common to see an orchestra, but if you go to smaller places, it is very seldom that you get to hear an orchestra like this with professional musicians of a very high standard,” tour manager Jens Kehling said.

The orchestra is based in Germany but features players from all over the world. The full Philharmonic orchestra has up to 80 members, but they regularly tour around the world as a chamber orchestra.

“Most of the people who play with us are still studying or have just graduated... this gives them an opportunity to improve their skills and perform as a soloist,” Mr Kehling said.

The concert starts at 8pm and tickets are on sale from 7pm. Children under 12 are free, students are $25, concession is $30 and full price is $35.
