AN ARMED carjacker was arrested in Wilsonton after leading police on a large scale man-hunt across the region yesterday.

The man was arrested in a McDonald's car park about 7pm after more than four hours on the run from authorities.

The dramatic search sent parts of Toowoomba into lockdown including schools and suburbs while the ground and air search narrowed in on the man's location.

The search started following a single-vehicle rollover on McDonald's Rd in Upper Lockyer about 2.30pm.

A car rolled on the dirt road with four people on board.

A good Samaritan who stopped to assist the passengers was then carjacked at gunpoint with one of the four people fleeing the scene in a white Volkswagen Amarok.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a 14-year-old suffered a jaw injury, a 15-year-old had back pain and a possibly wrist fracture, while another 14-year-old boy was treated for general pain.

The police helicopter, Polair, flew from Brisbane to support ground crews searching the Upper Lockyer and Murphys Creek areas.

Murphys Creek State School was put into lockdown while police investigated possible sightings of the carjacker.

The search area was narrowed to Darling Heights more than two hours after the hunt began when the stolen vehicle was found in Jennifer Crescent about 5pm.

Polair and police on the ground worked to narrow the search area that included the Japanese Gardens which were closed early at the request of officers.

Police investigations are continuing.
