Changing of the R.E.D. guard
Jenny London has spent 12 years guiding R.E.D. Inc, firstly as general manager then as CEO. She joined the R.E.D. Inc committee in 1999. She shared the R.E.D. Inc vision, having a daughter with an intellectual disability. R.E.D. Inc provides skills and arts programs for young people with disabilities, bringing them into the community.
"It was a smaller operation back then," Jenny told The Echo. "We had five staff and nine service users. Now we have 45 staff and 85 service users."
Jenny is handing the management reins over to Marie Gale, but she'll still be involved.
"I have loved every minute of it," Jenny said. "I'm looking forward to still being involved in special projects and support work, which I love - and less paperwork!"
Marie Gale has been working in the disability sector for 10 years. She worked with the State Government (Ageing, Disability and Home Care) and with a different service provider.
"I'm very excited to be working with R.E.D. Inc," Marie said. "R.E.D. Inc has a fabulous reputation in the community; it's progressive, flexible and does some really innovative things."
Sitting at her desk on her very first day on the job, Marie mused that the journey she is embarking on is a rewarding one - and a collaborative one.
"It's about where the R.E.D. Inc community sees the organisation going," Marie explained. "It's a privilege to help provide people with opportunities to become valued members of the community."
Despite being devoted to her work in the disability sector, Marie has another passion: "I have a passion for environment issues and conservation," she said. "I'm involved with wildlife conservation in Indonesia and regularly travel there. I work with Save Indonesian Endangered Species (SIES) which works with communities and local groups. We have had some great successes," Marie said, a smile flitting across her face.
