CFMEU launches national advertising campaign

MINING union the CFMEU has launched a national campaign modelled on the industry's own advertising blitz, titled "The mining boom, let's spread it around".

A new industry magazine and television commercials were pushing the idea that foreign workers were taking Australian jobs in the mining industry.

It also cites problems in Central Queensland communities, including Moranbah, where the mining boom has divided communities.

CFMEU national secretary Michael O'Connor said the advertising campaign highlighted how some seemingly qualified workers could not get jobs.

"The mining boom has to work for all Australians. Currently it is only working for a very few, while distorting other parts of the economy, such as manufacturing and construction."

The campaign centres on Enterprise Migration Agreements, which import qualified workers from overseas if specialised skills cannot be found here.

It also cites articles in mainstream media from senior mining and gas companies, who said they were looking to recruit workers from abroad.
