Cavs and Warriors go at it again for title

THE Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers will meet in the NBA Finals for the third straight season.

The Cavs beat the Boston Celtics 135-102 in game five of the Eastern Conference finals today, LeBron James with another pristine performance that helped him pass Michael Jordan as the NBA's all-time leading playoff scorer.

A three-pointer with 2:42 to go in the third quarter gave James his 5989th playoff point and the outright lead over the Chicago Bulls legend.

The bucket was part of a 35-point effort that also featured eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Kyrie Irving backed up his massive game four with 24 points and seven assists, while Kevin Love had a double-double, adding 11 boards to his 15 points.

For Boston, guard Avery Bradley was the only player to get anything going, with most of his 23 points coming in the first half.

The two finals teams have lost just one game between them on the way to the finals, the Warriors going a perfect 12-0 in cutting a swathe through the Western Conference and the Cavs dropping just one game.

This will be a match-up of some of the greatest players ever to step foot on a basketball court.

James, arguably the premier player in the game, leads a Cavs side that features the sublime talents of Australian-born, but US loyal, point guard Irving and sharpshooting big man Love.

But the Warriors have some serious strength, with the reigning back-to-back MVP Stephen Curry leading All Stars Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

It's one-all at the moment between these two super teams, with the Warriors claiming the 2015 title, 4-2, before the Cavaliers fought back from 3-1 down to turn the tables on Golden State last season.

The first game of the best-of-seven finals is slated for Thursday, June 1, US time, which means Australian fans can catch it on Friday, June 2.
