Carols to leave riverside

CAROLS by Candlelight will be held at Oakes Oval in Lismore this year, away from its traditional home by the river.

City Centre manager Renee Moehead said she had concerns about safety, parking and patrons' comfort at the river site and also wanted to see if holding the event in town would benefit retailers.

She also said there were costs involved with getting equipment and infrastructure down to the river.

Councillors Glenys Ritchie and Vanessa Ekins expressed concerns about "turning our backs on the river, again".

"It's about the only event we have on the river now," Cr Ritchie said.

Mayor Jenny Dowell sympathised, but said it was worth trialling the event at Oakes Oval to see how it would go.

Carols by Candlelight will be held on Sunday, December 15 from 6pm.
