Call for rise in allowances for single people on welfare

WELFARE groups from around the country renewed calls for a $50 increase to the Newstart Allowance at a national conference in Canberra on Monday.

The Australian Council of Social Services conference urged that the rise in the allowances for single people on welfare was urgent and needed to be included in the May federal budget.

It comes after previous calls for the increase, with the current allowances significantly below the international poverty line.

ACOSS chief executive Dr Cassandra Goldie said the fact that one in eight Australians were living in poverty was "an indictment on our nation".

Labor left figure Senator Doug Cameron and Greens social services spokeswoman Senator Rachel Siewert also spoke at the conference.
