Businesses deliver big boost to Base soup kitchen

A COMMUNITY Benefit grant and generosity of local businesses has helped Base Services dish up more meals for Toowoomba's homeless.

The not-for-profit group was awarded $34,000 to upgrade its kitchen to better meet the growing demand for hot lunches.

And thanks to Joyce Mayne providing the new commercial appliances including a fridge, dishwasher and stove, and GJ Gardner Homes and All About Plumbing donating labour and tools, the facility is well on its way to meeting that demand.

GJ Gardner Homes owner Ed Thomas said his business regularly supported Base Services, so donating labour was an easy decision.

"It's a good charity and we love helping it out," he said.

Joyce Mayne's Michael Farrugia said the local outlet provided about $45,000 in commercial grade appliances at cost, allowing Base Services to come in under budget.

He said it was part of supporting the work the Neil St centre did for Toowoomba's at-risk population.

Mick Grills from All About Plumbing also donated his time and skills to ensure the upgrade could proceed.

"We were at capacity before so this grant and the new kitchen will help us meet demand," Base Services' Tiff Spary said.

The kitchen is on track to reopen by June 5.
