Breastfeeding campaign over Facebook censorship

AN ACT of censorship has sparked a campaign to unite women who choose to breastfeed in public.

A stand against breastfeeding discrimination will be taken by South Burnett mums on January 5, 2014 at Kingaroy Shoppingworld.

The campaign, born in the South Burnett, started after photos of mother Stacey Turcan breastfeeding were removed from her Facebook page.

Now, South Burnett mums are changing their profile pictures to ones of themselves breastfeeding.

Should photos of a mother breastfeeding be allowed on Facebook?

Ms Turcan said it was to take a stand against "outdated attitudes".

"It is ridiculous people are abusing mothers for breastfeeding in public," she said. "A baby needs to eat - it's like society expects mothers to bottle feed from three months on."

The Wondai woman said there was definitely a stigma still attached to breastfeeding in public.

"I've had people come up and tell me about what I was doing was wrong," Ms Turcan said. "No wonder young mothers don't want to breastfeed because of all the discrimination against it." The breastfeeding debate has raged on for years in Australia but has only recently resurfaced in the South Burnett.

"I'm glad mothers are coming together and standing up for this. There is no need to report something so natural and something so beautiful."
