Boy, 5, critical after getting head stuck in car window

A YOUNG boy is in a critical condition following a freak accident in the garage of a home in the NSW Hunter Valley.

The five-year-old was attempting to climb into a partially open car window when he became stuck.

His mother told police she had left the boy watching television in the family lounge room when she went next door to visit a relative.

When she returned five minutes later, the boy was not in the room.

The mother searched the property and found the boy unconscious with his head wedged in the window.

He was released and rushed to a Newcastle hospital where he remained in a critical condition on Friday.

Police examined the car and found the boy's thongs.

A police spokesperson said it appeared the child had slipped while trying to climb into the car.

Investigations are continuing.
