Boxing Day sales beat retailer's expectations

AN ESTIMATED $2 billion went through the tills in yesterday's Boxing Day sales, beating retailers' predictions.

Russell Zimmerman from the Australian Retailers Association says sales were up about 5 or 6 per cent on last year as shoppers snapped up festive bargains.

"A number of retailers have said to me its the best they've seen for the Boxing Day sales," he said.

"We have seen a sizeable increase on last year."

There was a surprise spike in the sale of menswear and cosmetic items, while shoppers went online to buy household goods.
