Books prove a popular choice for relaxing holidays

NOW that the rush of presents, food and entertaining for Christmas Day is finally over, this is the perfect time to indulge in a good book.

And despite the easy availability of e-books on the internet, it appears many are sticking to the old favourite of a hard copy.

QBD Bookshop at the Sunshine Plaza has recorded a bumper sale of books this Christmas season.

Assistant manager Danielle Draper said the store had been "insanely busy" in the lead-up to Christmas.

"It is encouraging to see people are returning back to books as we are selling all the popular titles," Ms Draper said.

"It looks as if every single person would have got a book in their stocking for Christmas."

With a new Tom Clancy, Janet Evanovich and John Grisham on the shelves, readers have been spoilt for choice.

But it has been the "sweeping story of wealth, power, privilege and betrayal, set on a grand sugar cane plantation in Queensland" that has captured readers' interest.

Ms Draper said Australian actress and author Judy Nunn's book, Elianne, had been extremely popular.

Another Australian author, Tim Winton, was also proving a winner with his new book Eyrie.

For the kids, the classic Diary of a Wimpy Kid has grabbed their attention yet again.

This is the eighth book in the series by American author Jeff Kinney.

Ricky Ponting's autobiography At the Close of Play has been a bestseller in the non-fiction category.

The new Donna Hay Cookbook has also been a hot favourite.
