BOOK: The Weekend Photographer
AUTHOR: John Van Put
PUBLISHER: New Holland Publishers
RRP: $35

INDEED it is not what we see; rather, it is the way we see it and it is this power of observation combined with his imagination that takes John Van Put on his weekend journeys.

A business consultant by day, John finds his hobby a perfect antidote to job stresses.

He took up photography only eight or nine years ago and since then, it has become an important and very enjoyable part of his life.

Weekends and holidays are taken up with travelling to favourite locations.

Seascapes and landscapes are depicted here, with John's eye for the unusual much in evidence.

Self-taught with lots of trials and errors along the way, John shows us how, in order to derive the greatest satisfaction from a photograph, we need to focus on some basic principles and also attain a level of commitment.

Now of course, digital photography allows multiple shots and the feedback is immediate.

John's photographs cover a huge range of locations from Hong Kong, France, Italy, Germany, the United States as well as some sea and landscapes closer to home.

Although the iconic locations are recognisable, many others are, tantalisingly, unidentified.

John gives us plenty of information on each picture such as the type of camera used, setting, focal length, etc. but often not the location.

Nevertheless this is a book to savour and an all-encompassing guidebook to inspire keen photographers.
