IT'S paw-ssibly the most exciting news for the Big Cats crew - Kaitlyn the Sumatran tiger is pregnant with the first litter of cubs to be born at Australia Zoo.

An ultrasound earlier this week confirmed the five-year-old tiger was pregnant, expected to give birth in late June.

Australia Zoo head tiger supervisor Giles Clark said the anticipation of new cubs had been building since Ramalon, the cubs' 18-year-old father, showed positive fertility results last year.

"When the tigers began mating in early March, we were very excited to say the least," he said.

Giles said the pregnancy was a significant win for the future of the species with less than 500 Sumatran tigers left in the world.

"Not only will these cubs help the survival of the species in captivity, but they will also provide genetic diversity among captive tiger populations," he said.
