Ballina Players unleash genie

With the genie finally out of the lamp and onto the stage, the Ballina Players’ production of Disney’s Aladdin Junior looks set to be a colourful and magical piece of theatre.

The age-old Arabian Nights story of Aladdin tells of a nobody who, with a genie’s help, seeks fame and fortune and makes an important discovery about himself.

A cast of 46 enthusiastic district performers aged 10 to 18 have come together to prepare this adaptation of the classic 1992 animated Disney feature and are led by Lachlan Copeland (Aladdin), Sasha Giles (Princess Jasmine), Jenny Briguglio (the very blue genie) and Simon Dubber (the sultan).

Jenny Briguglio’s genie character has been locked away for 10,000 years yet has great power and lots of energy. Jenny sees the genie as a challenging, crazy character who wants to meet new people and have fun.

“Who wouldn’t be crazy after 10,000 years in a lamp?” Jenny said. She is enjoying the opportunity of exaggerating the character, and also of showing the genie’s emotions.

The genie grants the poor street rat Aladdin her “standard three-wish package” and he is whirled away into a world beyond his wildest dreams. Join him on his journey as he encounters a villainous vizier, a sarcastic parrot, a stern sultan, a team of narrators, villagers, harem girls and most importantly, a beautiful, rebellious princess.

Aladdin Junior is directed by Mike Sheehan and will be staged at the Players Theatre in Ballina from January 15 to 24. Tickets can be booked at Just Funkin Music, 124 River Street Ballina, or by phoning 6686 2440.
